TORCELLO
Torcello island represents the origins of Venice, the history of the city itself. Nowadays the island let these origins to being guessed, thanks to the most ancient building of the Lagoon, the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, erected about 639 A.D. The mosaics of the apse and, above all, those of the contra-façade express an enormous artistic value and they represent a marvellous Last Judgement. Thanks to the harmonic lines of the interior a myriad of particulars and prestigious details emerge: they cannot escape even the less trained look! Don’t miss the near Santa Fosca and the ascent to its bell-tower, from where you can admire an unusual view over the lagoon. At the most impassioned visitor we suggest the visit to the Museum of Torcello that houses witness of the Roman time and some extraordinary examples of palaeovenetian culture which date back to 300 b.C. the most dreaming tourist, finally, cannot shrink from sitting on Attila’s throne. It is a stone seat placed in the garden of the architectural complex and the legend said it belonged to Huns’ king, who, according to other fantastic legends, is buried with his immense treasure in this strip of the lagoon.
MURANO
The island of the greatest masterpieces of the glass art. Unique articles extracted from humble raw materials, from the fire of the kilns and from the able masters of Murano.
Murano is a privileged handicraft and industrial centre, that survives nowadays thanks to its fame in the history; it is however besieged by forged exemplars, by copies and speculators without scruple. We suggest the tourist to go in those shops and kilns where the mark “Made in Murano” is clearly visible, to touch the glass, however inexpert you could be, to feel its consistence, even if that couldn’t to protect the customer, because the copies are now become perfect. The tourist fond of glass must visit the Glass Museum, that houses sole and extraordinary pieces of this enrapturing history. Don’t miss the Church of the Saints Maria and Donato, of the XII century, with its original architectonic style, unique in its kind in Venice. The interior of the Church houses prestigious pictorial works by Bellini and Veronese and its floor is graced with medieval mosaics.
BURANO
The last bastion of the most traditional Venice. This small island represents, in fact, the vivacity and the love for the extraordinary ecosystem of the lagoon of Venice. Its conversion to the tourism was necessary but it hasn’t spoiled its originality. Burano is the island of the laces and of the brightly coloured houses. The lace is a very ancient embroidery art, and here it reaches its greatest artistic expression. In the main square, dedicated to the musician Galuppi, you may admire the most prestigious pieces and the ancient history of the lace. Burano is famous also for its “fish-shop”: consult in the Restaurant section to find the structures that offer the best dishes based on fish.
